The Alliance’s ultimate goal, its vision, is a world in which Self-Directed Education (SDE) is embraced as a cultural norm and is available to all children, everywhere, regardless of their family’s status, race, or income.

Their primary functions are maintaining visibility as home educators with civil government leaders, influencing the legislative process to protect freedom to home educate, publishing information of interest for home educators, and sponsoring seminars and events to encourage families.

Home School Legal Defense Association is a nonprofit advocacy organization established to defend and advance the constitutional right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children and to protect family freedoms. They provide homeschooling-related legal advice and representation to over 80,000 member families, promote homeschool-friendly legislation at the state and federal levels, and offer information and resources to encourage and support all homeschoolers.
